Zanzibar: Spice Tour

Zanzibar has a long history as a center of trade and production of spices and other crops. A walk around a typical plot of land reveals dozens if not hundreds of different plant species, with uses varying from seasoning food, to making nail polish, to curing malaria. A young man who went by the nickname Malai, meaning "ice cream", showed us around his family land. He gave us a demonstration of harvesting from a coconut tree by climbing it, using just his hands and his feet with a bit of twine stretched between them. I'm a climber, but you wouldn't catch me going up there using that gear!
